Week 3 - two sets of comments due Sunday 2/27

This week I want you to identify a skill or task that you know you need to work on. It might be something like how to use the copy machine, strengthening your shelf-reading and shelving skills, an aspect of circulation like processing holds or renewing, or familiarizing yourself with the location of certain types of materials. In a comment below, tell me what you are going to learn, how you are going to learn it, and how I might assist you.

At the end of the week, go back onto this blog and comment again. Describe what you learned, how comfortable you now feel with the skill, and if you have any questions or further instructional needs.

Also, this week we must do the contract!

Week 2 - comments due Sunday 2/20

This week we will continue to train the new SLA's and do some refresher training on returning SLA's. Please take a look at the task chart on the white board each day. When you finish your daily tasks, you may clean shelves and shelf-read, or we may assign you a special task. Please do not assume that you may read or do homework, but it may be possible occasionally.

For all SLA's, we will complete the quarterly contract and discuss setting your individual goals.

For new SLA's we will work on circulation training. We will focus on the skills of:
checking in
checking out
renewing
processing holds.

Quarter 3 - Week 1

Welcome to our new Student Library Assistants, and welcome back to those returning! We have a great crew this semester. We will use this blog as a classroom, with assignments and a place for discussion. Be sure to check the blog each week and to complete your assignments carefully. They are designed to help you learn library and research skills.

Tasks for this week:

1. Read the comments below each of the blog postings entitled "Tips for Future SLA's." Last quarter's student library assistants left you with some advice!
2. Read the document linked here, entitled "Shelving."
3 Complete all the levels in the game "Order in the Library." Print out your final certificate.

We will work this week on setting up your Google accounts so that you can post on this blog. We will also complete the SLA contract, and talk about confidentiality. Your training this week will focus on shelving.
