Keep on trucking - Asmt due Friday

So, keep on going with the research project. Besides the Supreme Court book, you can also use Gale Reference Library, which is an online database. Access it through the library homepage's "Student Toolkit." The password is mustang. GRL is simply digitized versions of reference books that you can search and save. It will provide similar information to the Young Oxford Companion.

Thanks for all your hard work during the book fair. It really helps to know that we can depend on you to keep the library running. Please be very careful with your shelving. We have had several situations lately in which a book is not in its correct spot. A mis-shelved book is a lost book and an embarrassment to our library. We are confident in your skills, but if you are unsure please ask! Thanks and enjoy the week.

Research skills - next steps. Due Tuesday 12/14

Great job on your first Noodle Tools assignment. I know there have been some frustrating moments, but you are persevering all the same. You have now gained some background information on judicial review and civil and human rights. The next step is to do some more specific reading on one aspect of judicial review. You will focus on one of three cases: Marbury v. Madison, Dred Scott, or U.S. v. Nixon.

As we conduct this research, we will maintain a cart of your books and materials, so check them out to yourself and put them on the cart marked "Constitutional Issues" in our office.

1. Use The Young Oxford Companion to the Supreme Court of the United States, by Patrick (REF 347.73 Pat, on cart) to read about the three cases. Add the book to your Noodle tools account with an annotation explaining what it is and what info you found useful.

2. Still in Noodle Tools, add your research question to the project "How did the principle of judicial review protect the constitutional right to _______ in the case of ______?". Fill in the blanks!

3. Use the library catalog to create a resource list with at least three print resources and three websites from Webpath Express for your topic. Pull the print resources and put them on the cart.

Assignment - due Sunday, Dec 5

Welcome back from our unexpectedly long Thanksgiving break. I hope you had a great time!

This week's assignment refers to the two articles that you were assigned to read two weeks ago. They are entitled "The Struggle for Human Rights" from the book Bill of Rights, and "Judicial Review," from The U.S. Constitution.

For each article, you must do the following:
1. Reread the article
2. Log in to Noodle Tools (we set it up a long time ago! See me if you need help)
3. Create a new project in Noodle Tools entitled "Constitutional Issues."
4. Create bib cards for each of the books that the articles came from (use the OPAC to get publishing information). Include an annotation that summarizes the article and tells how it might be useful in your research.
5. Create 3 notecards for each article. Each notecard will include: an important quotation from the article (3 sentences max); an explanation of its meaning in your own words; your ideas, connections and thoughts about its importance. The notecards will provide fields for each of these parts.
6. Share your project with me. The name of my dropbox is Constitutional Issues
7. Add a comment to this blog posting to let me know that you have completed the assignment. Please include any questions or problems that you have.

Welcome to Quarter 2 - November 15-19, 2010

We are off and running on the new quarter. This quarter we will concentrate on research skills and the library resources that can support you in your studies. I want you to continue to develop your library skills (circulation, organization, patron assistance), while becoming an expert in one or two databases. You will have a responsibility to teach that information, through a webcast, brochure, fact sheet, or live lesson. In order to work on research skills, we will do some research. We will focus the research on constitutional issues, thereby giving you some background for your CBA.

This week:
1. In a blog response, write about your SLA goals for the quarter. Take a look at your evaluation from last quarter to get some ideas. Set three goals for circulation, organization, and patron assistance in the library.
2. Read the two articles provided: "Judicial Review" and "The Struggle for Human Rights." These are your background articles for the research on constitutional issues. Keep these articles as we will annotate them on the blog next week!

yun mi's quarter goal review

this quarter goal: 1. know more about the library
2. improve skills on shelving
3. improve helping skill
4. know how to run circulation desk
  1. i defiantly achieved this goal. since i started to work on library, i learned more a bout the library every single day.
  2. i think i got the goal achieved but not completely. i know how to do a basic shelving and know how to read Dewy decimal but sometimes shelve book on the wrong area if there is lots of book by same author. but, i m getting my shelving better and better every day and getting faster and accurate.
  3. well, there weren't lots of people coming to the library in the morning so there wasn't lots of people to help out but i helped the one who came in the morning best as i can.
  4. defiantly nailed this goal. now i know how to run circulation desk without problem. ( but i still know how to out hold on items.)
next quarter goal:
  • nail dewy decimal
  • don't screw up on copier
  • know where all the available resource belong in the library
  • more helping

Madelines Quarter One Review

My goals for this quarter were:

•work on shelving Dewey Decimal stuff

•improve my people skills, in terms of helping patrons

•know the layout of the library and where all the books go

I have gotten a strong understanding of the Dewey system, and i don't screw up the order when the numbers get all specific (e.g. 601.6650). I actually find Dewey shelving easier than fiction shelving, because numbers are easier for me to think about, I guess.

I wouldn't say I have achieved this goal. I have been helping more people in the library, but I'm somewhat of a social misfit, so I think I better work on this goal in second quarter as well.

I know the layout of the library very well now, and shelving books is not a challenge. Though I haven't shelved books in the office, and I would like to be doing that more often

Goals for Next Quarter:

• keep improving my ability to help patrons

•be able to shelve books in the office bit of the library

• CONSISTENTLY put the little date stamp thingy in the back of the book! (I often forget when I am checking out a book to myself)

Monday, November 1, 2010

Quarer One Review

My Goals Were:
1.Learn where every type of book is shelved and how to shelve them.
2.Improve my ability to help patrons.
3.Improve my knowledge of the circulation desk.

I achieved my goals this quarter and am very happy with what I have learned. I now know where to shelve all kinds of books, even the ones in the office. I have been able to help patrons with more things as the quarter progresses. I have added many skills about the circulation desk to collection and now I can successfully accomplish the things I need to.

Patron Assistance:
I think I have been able to efficiently help the patrons who have come into the library this quarter. I have been able to answer questions and requests from patrons about the library. Also, I have asked questions when I needed to, and now have greatly increased my knowledge.

Library Organization/Administration:
I have been working really hard to keep the library in good shape this quarter. I was a little bit nervous with all the things that we were learning at the beginning of the year. Now I am able to keep the books neat without a problem.

Information Literacy Skills:
I am now fairly good at shelving books of all sorts. I understand that "nothing comes before something" when I am shelving nonfiction books. Also, I know that fiction books are shelved by the authors last name. I learned that if there are several books by the same author that you then move to alphabetizing by the title of the book. In addition, I learned why you might put the fifth book in the series before the first or second book in the series.

Possible Goals for Next Quarter:
1. Be more confident in the skills I have.
2. Increase my abilities to help patrons.
3. Start to be more independent.
4. Learn new information about research tools and the research process.
My goals were:
-to work on shelving the non-fiction books through the dewey decimal way.
-Become more familiare with the library and how it works.

Yes I have achieved my goals because I used the do you know dewey link on one of the blogs helping me better understand the dewey decimal system. Also, I shelved some non-fiction books too. And so far throughout learning all that I can about the library this quarter, I have figured out how it works.

A -patron assistance: I feel that I have been doing very well with patron assistance. I've been helping everyone with all of their questions and If I did not know the answer, I would ask Mrs. Merrigan or Mrs. Trumm. I've done very well in learning how to check in/out books for people also.

B-library organization/administration:
I have done very well in the care and keeping of the library and its resources. I have to admit that when I started I was a little nervous when I started learning about the dewey decimal system, but now I'm very confident in it and shelving the non-fiction books and fiction books.

C-Information literacy skills:
I have definitely increased my learning in being able to find books and information. When I started, I had a lot of trouble finding books in the library, but now I can find them very easily and also help others find them too.

Goal ideas for second quarter:
-further develop my learning with organization of the library.
-work more on the dewey decimal system.

Q1 Penultimate week assignments - Nov 1-Nov 5

Wow, it's November already!  We have several things to finish up before the end of the quarter.  All of you have done a great job of jumping in with both feet to learn about the library, its organization, and how to help our patrons and each other.  Being a "teacher" and "adviser" is a big part of what we ask you to do.  Within the next two weeks, we will meet for your quarter-end evaluation.  In order to prepare for that meeting, please do the following:

1. Look back at your goals from the beginning of the quarter (on blog). What were they? Did you achieve them? Describe this process in a blog comment.
2. Reflect on your achievements this quarter. In a blog comment below, write about your performance in these three areas: (a) Patron assistance (b) Library organization/administration (c) Information literacy skills. You might include stories about specific times when you really shone in these areas.
3.  Log in to your library account.  Under Catalog, go to "Resource Lists."  Create a new resource list called Q1 Reading Record.  Look up the books that you have read from our library this quarter in the catalog and click "Add to this list."  After you have added all your books, go back to "Resource Lists."  Choose the option "email this list" and send it to me at smerrigan@osd.wednet.edu.  Good job!
4. Look forward to your goals and plans for next quarter. The focus will be the research process and research tools, while strengthening your SLA and library skills. What ideas do you have for 2nd quarter goals?

P.S. If you don't already know the meaning of "penultimate," look it up in a print dictionary and report in to me or Ms. Trumm.  :-)

Week of October 11-15

Conference Week and the week of the Big Book Move.  I will also be out on Thursday and Friday for the Washington Library Media Association annual conference.  I always come back with lots of new ideas, so prepare yourself for next week!

Instead of an online assignment this week, you will have a good old-fashioned worksheet.  This is a treasure hunt of the library, to make sure that you are familiar with all our special collections and their locations.  Keep in mind that after the Big Book Move, the non-fiction collection will have shifted around to include more shelves.

The worksheets are ready for you and I will tape them up to your section of the white board.  Thanks for all your hard work!

Sept 20-24, Sept 27-Oct 1, 2010 (Weeks 3 and 4)

All five of you are doing a great job.  I am very pleased with your progress, and we will continue to train you over time.  The beginning of the year is so busy that it can be hard to fit in all the pieces!  We have a new task schedule up on the whiteboard so that we can ensure that various maintenance tasks get done throughout the week, without one person feeling unfairly burdened.  You can also find posted on the door a list of Things To Do When You Think There Is Nothing Left To Do.  If you are at a loss for what to do next, please check with us.  There is always work to be done.

We are going to focus this week on the Dewey Decimal System.  Please visit the following links and do the activities:

DDC Multimedia Tour http://www.oclc.org/dewey/resources/tour/ddc1.html
Do We Know Dewey? http://library.thinkquest.org/5002/
Print out the quizzes and puzzles at the end on an as needed basis.   Have fun!

Week of September 13-17 (Week 2)

The year is off and running and this is our first full week.  Ms. Trumm and I have been busy bringing classes in through the library, and you five have already been a big help to us.  I know sometimes it seems like we don't have time to explain exactly how the day will go or what we need you to do, and it is true!  The library is a very busy place!  Don't worry.  We will continue to train you all semester.  Don't be afraid to ask questions either.

Tasks for this week:
1. Continue to work on shelving.  Read this document on shelving from the University of Ottawa library.  Visit "Order in the Library 4.0" to play shelving games and improve your skills. Print out your certificate of achievement at the end of your playing time.  You don't have to do all the levels at one time, but print your certificate at the end of your session.

2.  Quarterly contract.  I will meet with you this week to read and sign your contract.  Please think about personal goals for yourself.  Look at the goals that other SLA's set on this blog in February and April 2010 (see old posts on right side).  You will record your goals as a comment on this blog.

3.  Circulation desk.  We will train you on check out and check in procedures.

Have fun!

Welcome to SLA, Fall 2010

I am so excited that you will be joining the Library Information & Technology Program this semester to work as a Student Library Assistant.  You will learn a lot about how the library works, how to help other students, and how to use new kinds of technology.  In the process, I hope you will also have a lot of fun!

You will use this blog each week to access and complete your Information Literacy assignments.  This week we are going to complete the following tasks:
1.  Set up a Google account and a Noodle Tools account
2.  Discuss expectations and set goals for the quarter
3.  Learn the layout of the library
4.  Learn to shelve fiction books

Please show this blog to your parents/guardians.  This is a good place for them to see what you are working on as a Student Library Assistant.

Week 6-7 (June 1-June 11)

Check your grade on Skyward. Several of you are missing some assignments.

Great job on inventory! We are still mopping up the last details, but the shelves were really in very good order. Thanks for all your help.

We will begin quarter end evaluations during the week of June 7. We will also begin interviewing potential SLA's for next year. Please encourage qualified students to apply!

By end of quarter, you need a BibMe with 4 or more book reviews and a final draft of a Jing instructional screencast. Work out with others who is doing what topic so they don't duplicate. If you work with a partner, you must make two. Have fun! Keep them short and sweet.

Baylee and Kylie have already indicated their screencast topics (placing hold and using jingproject). Comment below what you plan to do.

Also, Finn and Baylee are working on a library video that will be fun and feature our library staff. See them if you want to be more involved.

Our final SLA meeting will be June 17. We will have pizza and watch screencasts!

Info Lit - Week 5

Three things this week:
1. See last week regarding Jing screencast assignment. Let us know your topic in the comment section below.
2. SLA meeting Thursday 11:30-12:30. We will view your screencast, so be ready!
3. Inventory next week. Read your shelves! Shelve everything that's out! Get ready to crawl around on the floor with the laptop and scanner!

Do not check out books to anyone who has overdues. The end of the year is drawing near!

Q4 - Week 4/5 Info Lit Assignment (May 10-May 21)

MSP is really throwing us out of our game, isn't it? Thanks to all of you who are taking on special projects and/or doing the usual tasks as silently as possible. I've talked with most of you about the info lit project for these two weeks, but here it is too:

Create a Jing screencast to teach a particular skill on the computer. It might be how to do something on the catalog, how to save to your folder, how to access a database, whatever.

You should plan your screencast and practice clicking and talking before you record it. When you have created your screencast and are happy with it, save it to your folder. We will view them at our next SLA meeting and provide feedback.

My goal for you is to have a finished product by the end of the year that future students may use to learn the skill.

Have fun and good luck!

Q4 - Week 3 Info Lit Assignment (May 3-7)

Sorry about the SLA meeting confusion. Friday had too much going on; this week is crazy too. We will have our meeting, but I don't yet know when it will be.

Tasks for the week:
1. Don't forget about your BibMe reading log. Each annotation should include a brief summary, supported opinion, recommendation. By the end of the quarter, you should have reviewed at least four books.
2. Perform spot check #2 on someone else's section. Choose a section from the red binder (not someone who works the same period as you). Read their section for order. Fix any problems. Rate the section for order, neatness, cleanliness. Do another section if you have time.
3. Read your own sections if you have any more time.

Monday, April 26, 2010

Q$ Week 2 Assignment

1. BibMe - Don't forget about this! By quarter end you should have at least four entries. Each entry should include a short summary, supported opinion, reader recommendation.
2. Webspiration - I have shared with you a brainstorming web. Think about different topics and tasks that you could teach others (SLA's or patrons) to do. For example: logging in to your library account, placing holds, creating a resource list, saving to your folder. The teaching method could be a help sheet, a screencast, a handbook, etc. Add at least three new ideas to the brainstorm. Sign your name to your ideas.
3. Go to jingproject.com. Set up an account for yourself or use the marshallmiddleschoollibrary@gmail.com account. Download the application and play with it. Get to know how it works. Plan on using the same computer each time, so you don't have to download it repeatedly.
4. SLA monthly meeting on Friday, 12-1:00. Bring your lunch and we'll bring dessert. Bring a printout of your reading log.

Monday, April 19, 2010

Welcome to Quarter 4!

All of you are now seasoned SLA's and I'm so pleased to have you as part of the team. All of you bring skills and personality traits that add to our program. A big THANK YOU to each and every one of you.

New quarter - time to set some goals! In the comments section below, you will add three goals in three areas. For each goal, write two actions that you will take to work towards your goal. The three areas are:

1. Patron assistance
2. Library skills/organization
3. Technology skills

Please be specific about what you want to achieve and how you will get there. See me if you need some ideas.

Week 9 - Assignments

Welcome back from Spring Break! I hope you had a great time and are ready for the final spring push.

Can you believe we are in the last week of third quarter? This week we will be reading your assigned shelves and meeting with you for your quarter end evaluation. During your evaluation meeting we will discuss your quarter goals, your performance and achievements, your grade and report card comments, and your goals for 4th quarter. To prepare, please write about the following in the comments section of this blog:

1. Look back at your goals from the beginning of the quarter (on blog). What were they? Did you achieve them? Describe.
2. Reflect on your achievements this quarter. Write about your performance in these three areas: (a) Patron assistance (b) Library organization/administration (c) Information literacy skills. You might include stories about specific times when you really shone in these areas.
3. Look forward to your goals and plans for next quarter. The focus will be teaching others through handbook, technology, mentoring your SLA and library skills. What ideas do you have for 4th quarter goals?

Week 8 (March 29-April 2)

Hello SLA's!
We have two weeks left of the quarter. We will continue to learn about resources through the end of April, then begin to produce our SLA handbook and informational screencasts. Be thinking about topics that you have become expert in and how you might share that knowledge.

This week:
1. Review your progress report for missing assignments or scores that I might have missed. Look through your personnel folder for returned papers. Most of you are doing quite well, but there are some things missing.
2. Continue to work on your BibMe reading record. As library assistants, I do expect you to read! During a nine-week quarter, I would expect a minimum of 4-5 book reviews. Remember that you must read in order to make recommendations to others.
3. Log in to E-library. Use the username and PW on the poster in the library. Set yourself up a "my e-library" account so that you can save your searches. Use good keywords to search for an article related to your webspiration research topic. Print it out and add the citation to your BibMe account. Read the article.
4. In the comments section below, record three facts you learned about your topic.

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

Week 7 Assignment (March 22-26)

My fault, I did not get the email addresses up for you all until late in the week. Hopefully you were able to get your webspiration shared out. We'll extend that assignment another week. To view others' webs, you have to go to your email and follow the link there. Then you can do #2 down below. Carry on with the others too. See repeat below:

2. Visit two other SLA's webs and add questions or comments. Use another shape and/or color and sign your first name in your boxes, so we know who did what. Help your fellow SLA's craft their research questions.
3. Work on your BibMe reading log!!!!!!!
4. Concentrate on your non-fiction sections this week. Read them for order! I'm serious! They should be beautiful!!! Identify three amazing, interesting, attractive books from your sections and set them on display above your shelves.

Monday, March 15, 2010

Week 6 March 15-19

Good morning!

It is Battle week, so things will be crazy! We are holding most battles in the library, so if you are a battling SLA, we might send you away to preserve security.

This week, you have four assignments:

1. Share your webspiration web with other SLA's. You will find their e-mail addresses posted on the white board in the office.

Have a great week and do good work!

Week 5 Assignment (Mar 8-12)

Happy week!

Thanks again for all your hard work last week when both Ms. Trumm and I were out. I appreciate your doing what you are supposed no matter who the adult personnel is.

This week we will practice Step 1 of the research process. Last week you identified a topic and research question that you could research in our library. Many of you wrote great questions! Remember that a good research question does not have just one answer and will not require just one source. Information is gathered from many sources and perspectives in order to create answers to big, interesting questions and LOTS OF LITTLE QUESTIONS.

We are also going to use a new tool called mywebspiration.com Set yourself up a new account or use the SLA account info to sign in, and use the mindmap template for brainstorming. You want to put your topic or main question in the center of the web, and then generate all the related questions, ideas, and words you can think of. Don't discount anything yet. This is a brainstorm so anything goes! Aim for at least nine bubbles off your main idea. Under the "share" menu, add me as a collaborator. Later this week, I will ask you to add other SLA's as collaborators too, and you will comment and add to each other's brainstorms.

Keep working on your BibMe reading log. Please comment below on how Wednesday and Thursday went for you last week. This is your check-in! What did you accomplish last week that you are proud of? What struggles did you have? What should I know?

Assignments - due by Friday
1. Mywebspiration.com brainstorm on your topic. Main topic/question bubble with 9+ offshoots.
2. Blog comment on your work last week.
3. BibMe - keep working on that reading log!

Thanks for keeping things going!

Hi, wonderful SLA's, from the Seattle Convention Center!

Thanks for keeping things running smoothly in our Library Information & Technology (LIT) Center. I am at a technology conference and one of the things I have been reminded of is how integral technology must be in our library. We are all about information, in all its forms.

Right now I am listening to the keynote speaker, Philippe Cousteau. His grandfather was the famous marine explorer and environmentalist, Jacques Cousteau. Look Jacques up in our catalog to find out more about him. Philippe now has a show on the Discovery Channel about the world's oceans and the need to protect them. Find out more on this link: http://www.earthecho.org/ and planetgreen.com

Enjoy your long weekend. See you Monday!

Week 4 Assignment (March 1-4)

I was so impressed with your thoughtfulness and focus at our SLA monthly meeting on Friday. Thank you for sharing your book reviews with the group, for asking good questions, and for being such wonderful people. I told Mr. Hitchman on Friday that I really felt that the meeting had been a valuable use of time for all concerned (plus we ate donuts!). Our next meeting will be Friday, March 26, during 3rd period.

This week you will use some of the features of the library catalog to create a resource list. Please complete the following tasks:

1. Go to one of your assigned non-fiction or reference sections and choose a topic for "research." The topic might be something like recycling, dragons in fairy tales, iguanas and other lizards, the Vietnam War, etc. Find at least one book in your section that would help you begin this research. NOTE: You will not actually be DOING this research (at least this week).

2. In the comments section below, record your research topic idea, the title of one book, and a research question that you could pursue. Research questions are large in scope and require information from many different sources. They are not answerable in only a few words. Examples of research questions: How could we encourage more recycling in our community? Why would an iguana make a great pet (or not)? What were some of the major events leading up to U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War?

3. Go to the library catalog. Sign in with your username and PW. Under catalog, choose "Resource Lists" from the left hand menu. Add a new list and give it a title related to your research topic.

4. Add at least three titles and three websites to your resource list. Use the subject search button or begin with the title that you have already selected to find more sources of information. Follow the linked subject headings "find it" and "webpath express." Print your resource lists when they are completed using the "printable" button. Turn in your resource lists (one for Library Materials, one for Online Resources).

5. Continue to work on your BibMe reading log.

Okay, I know that seems like a lot of steps to follow, but here is what you should end up with: (1) comment on blog regarding research topic and question and one title (2) printed resource lists with three books and three websites (3) BibMe.

Week 3 Assignment (Feb 22-26)

This week we will continue to work on shelving skills and understanding the Dewey Decimal System. Although most of you completed the webquest last week, few of you had time to sit down with your assigned non-fiction or reference sections to analyze what books and materials are included there. This week you have three tasks in addition to your reading log on BibMe. All assignments are due by Friday.

1. Spend time in your assigned sections. Take your webquest assignment from last week with you and look at the books there. Use this form to analyze one of your sections.

2. Read this document on shelving from the University of Ottawa library.

3. Visit this "Order in the Library 4.0" to play shelving games and improve your skills. Print out your certificate of achievement at the end of your playing time.

We will have a SLA meeting on Friday during 2nd period. You will be excused from your class at that time, but you are responsible for any assignments you miss. We will have donuts at our meeting. Please bring with you a print-out of your Bibme reading log for this quarter.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Week 2 Assignment (Feb 16-19)

Here we are beginning Week 2 of the quarter. Hopefully you are getting the hang of shelving and other responsibilities in the library. This week the focus is learning about the Dewey Decimal System. I want you to understand how the system is organized, how it applies to our library, and what kinds of topics and subjects are found in your assigned shelves. In order to do this, you will complete the following webquest. It is due by Friday when you arrive for your SLA time.

1. Follow these links to get the handouts.
2. Follow this link for the assignment. Follow the directions exactly. On the second handout, record a topic and website from the webquest but record the title of a book from that Dewey section from our library (hint: use the catalog and subject search).
3. Turn in your handouts.
4. Visit your assigned shelves. Write in the comment section below about the Dewey subjects that you find there. What books are there? We are a relatively small research library. What holes do you find in our collection?
5. Continue to use BibMe to keep track of your reading. Annotations should include a short summary, your opinion, a recommendation (audience or read-alike).

We will continue to train you this week. Work hard on your assigned shelves each day. See me if you have any questions!

Goals for the Semester!

Hello. First of all I would like to welcome all the new SLA's. I can't wait to work with you all.

My personal goals for this semester are very much close to the ones I have had in the past. My main goal is to promote the library in a positive way. I want people to just come in because they want to, not because the have to. The library is such a great place to be and I am very happy to be a part of it. One of my other goals is to help the new SLA's with getting to know the library and helping them with their jobs. I'm here to help so if you have a question, don't be shy. My final goal is to do whatever I can to help the library be a happy place. That means keeping it clean, making sure things are in order, and being a kind and helpful to all the students who enter the library. (Well, all students in general.)

To all the SLA's, I hope you all have a great semester and I can't wait to get to work with you all.

Welcome to Semester 2!

We are starting out the semester with quite a few introductory SLA's, as well as a few advanced. Because we have so many SLA's this semester, we will be able to divide up shelving and circulation duties better, and provide time for SLA's to explore library resources and develop their skills and interests. One of your weekly assignments will be to respond to this blog (it will be due each Sunday evening).

Other topics we will focus on in the coming weeks include:

Locations of materials in the library
Using the catalog
Shelving fiction, non-fiction, and other materials
Patron confidentiality
Circulation (check in, check out, holds)
Library tech - projection cart, copy machine, printer, other

BLOG ASSIGNMENT #1: Respond in complete, thoughtful, correct sentences. Write about three goals you have for yourself as a student library assistant. Think about particular skills you would like to develop, tasks you would like to perform, and areas of knowledge that you would like to expand. How can Ms. Trumm and Ms. Merrigan help you achieve your goals? What can you do? Due: Tuesday, February 16, 2010.

Extra Credit: Visit the Marshall Reads Blog (reached from the catalog home page) and write about a book you have recently read. You may add a cover image, if you wish.
