We are starting out the semester with quite a few introductory SLA's, as well as a few advanced. Because we have so many SLA's this semester, we will be able to divide up shelving and circulation duties better, and provide time for SLA's to explore library resources and develop their skills and interests. One of your weekly assignments will be to respond to this blog (it will be due each Sunday evening).
Other topics we will focus on in the coming weeks include:
Locations of materials in the library
Using the catalog
Shelving fiction, non-fiction, and other materials
Patron confidentiality
Circulation (check in, check out, holds)
Library tech - projection cart, copy machine, printer, other
BLOG ASSIGNMENT #1: Respond in complete, thoughtful, correct sentences. Write about three goals you have for yourself as a student library assistant. Think about particular skills you would like to develop, tasks you would like to perform, and areas of knowledge that you would like to expand. How can Ms. Trumm and Ms. Merrigan help you achieve your goals? What can you do? Due: Tuesday, February 16, 2010.
Extra Credit: Visit the Marshall Reads Blog (reached from the catalog home page) and write about a book you have recently read. You may add a cover image, if you wish.
Some goals of former SLA's:
ReplyDelete... learn to repair books
... learn to finish (cover, etc.) books
... learn the alphabet better
... create new window displays
... learn more about our technology and help other students with this knowledge
... understand how books/mags/etc. are filed in our library, and where (learn Dewey decimal systems)
... help students find books -- fiction, nonfiction and reference -- and materials needed
... take responsibility for doing their job responsibly -- show their independence in ways that help others in a caring manner

Hi I would really like to learn how to repair books. Also I would love to learn how to make copies because I've been asked a bunch of times in class to go make copies and passed up the oppurtunity because I had no idea how to make copies! Another thing I would like to learn how to use the circulation desk and to help out other students by being a part of it.
ReplyDeleteMy goals for this quarter are to be able to run the circulation desk. I would also like to make my sections of the library look amazingly organized. Another one of my goals is to be able to create window displays, and just be able to help anyone who needs it in the library.
ReplyDeleteOK to be more specific on my goals..
ReplyDeletefor my window display i would like to do 2 one of which i have already accomplished. I would like to switch one of my goals to be learning how to repair and put covers on the books.
For my goal about being able to help people know were a specific book is, i guess that just requires reading the shelves more and knowing were everything is :)
Hi! I would like to learn about the circulation desk, and to make some window displays, and to make the library feel like a happy place.I want to know how to run the circulation desk so that i can help people when ever they need it. I want to do window displays because it sounds like fun. The library needs to be a happy place so that people will come back.
